Soft tissue chondroma of the plantar foot in a 14-year-old boy: a case report

Abstract: Introduction and importance Soft tissue chondroma is a rare benign tumor with a predilection for hands and feet. The incidence is only about 1.5% of all benign tumors and this neoplasm is rarely seen in the paediatric population. In this paper we report the case of a 14-year-old boy treated for a soft tissue chondroma located next to the left foot second metatarsal. “…1 Cumulatively, the condition is reported in only about 200 cases. 10 Chung and Enzinger studied 104 patients with extraskeletal chondroma. The condition was found in the upper limbs in 72% and in the lower limbs in 24% of their cases, 88% of which are located in the feet or ankles.…”

“…Benradi et al reported a case of a 14-year-old boy who underwent a surgical excision of a soft tissue chondroma of the plantar aspect of his foot. 10 Salvatori et al reported a case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with trigger finger due to a mass attached to the flexor digitorum superficialis of her ring finger which was histologically diagnosed as an extraskeletal chondroma. 12 We have not encountered in the literature an extraskeletal chondroma in a foot of a child as young as 8 years as in this reported case.…”

“…15 Theories regarding the etiology of soft tissue chondromas include the embryologic and the metaplastic ones. 10,[20][21][22] In the latter theory, it is suggested that longterm trauma and low-grade inflammation trigger chondroid differentiation of mesenchymal cells that ultimately form mature cartilage. Although this might not fully explain the pathogenesis of all soft tissue chondromas, it might represent a reasonable theory for at least some, especially those happening at frequently traumatized distal extremities.…”
