Soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) were identified in proglacial lacustrine (glaciolacustrine) sediments dated to 25–24 ka in the Buivydžiai outcrop, situated 30 km north of Vilnius in east Lithuania. These sediments accumulated in front of the last Weichselian glaciation maximum. The SSDS originated due to sandy silt liquefaction that disrupted the decimeter-thick silty sand interlayer. A NW-SE trending Buivydžiai fault was mapped in the proximity (8 km) of the Buivydžiai outcrop. The fault is well traced by a dense drilling in the sediments of the preglacial Daumantai Formation in the basal part of the Quaternary cover and attributed to the earliest Pleistocene. Depth difference of the formation along the fault is ~5–8 m; the northern flank is relatively uplifted with respect to the southern flank. The Buivydžiai earthquake was most likely induced by formation of an elastic forebulge flexure of the Earth's crust in front of the ice sheet. The magnitude was evaluated ~M = 6.0–6.5 and was most likely of shallow hypocenter depth. Furthermore, the Bystritsa (Belarus) earthquake of magnitude M = 3.5–4.0 was registered in December 1908 to the east (12 km) of the Buivydžiai outcrop along the Buivydžiai fault, which points to recurrent seismic activity of this fault.

Holocene marine sediment from proto‐Florida Bay has been eroded, suspended, transported landward and has infiltrated downward (to 1 m depth) to fill secondary pores in subaerially exposed Late Pleistocene limestone. Sediment mineralogy (up to 95% aragonite), sediment texture (mostly needle‐like, <15 µm), and bulk sediment stable‐isotope values (upward trend in δ18O from −1 to −3‰ and δ13C from 3.5 to −2‰) of infill sediment is used to document inter‐stratal movement of sediment ahead of marine transgression. Nearby Florida Bay probably supplied needle‐like aragonite crystals by a storm surge mechanism that transported sediment landward and perhaps sorted the marine mud fraction. Currently, the core site is covered by freshwater microbial lime mud with a texture different than most infill sediment. That sediment crosses a formational and sequence boundary can have several implications: microfossil displacement; sedimentologic interpretation of mixed mud and sand‐size grains; porosity and permeability reduction; and associated diagenesis with perched ground water. If sediment infiltration is recognized in core and thin section, these mud‐filled pores can aid in recognition of subaerial exposure. Stratigraphically, the occurrence of marine sediments landward of the shoreline and below freshwater deposits may be interpreted as the result of a rapid rise and fall of sea level.

The La Alberca-Teremendo fault is a 26 km-long, complex fault composed of an en échelon array of short crustal fault segments, belonging to the Morelia-Acambay fault system. This fault system shows parallel scarps with morphological evidence of recent activity such as drainage alteration, maximum throws of 50 m and minimum throws of 1.4 m that displace the recent soils. The fault acted as a conduit for the formation of the La Alberca de Guadalupe maar (23000 to 21000 years ago) and displaced afterwards its phreatomagmatic sequences. The paleoseismic analysis indicates that the La Alberca-Teremendo fault moved three times in the past 23000 years (age of the maar); this activity caused an average vertical displacement of 87 cm, and might have generated earthquakes with magnitudes Mw between 6.6 and 7, as well as volcano-tectonic earthquakes with magnitudes Mw between 4 and 5.5. The displacements were identified on the fault through the superposition of soils differentiated by a disconformity and an anomalous increase in the percentage of clay and organic matter. The La Alberca-Teremendo fault has dominant dip slip with a minor left-lateral component, a slip rate of 0.114 mm/year, and an average recurrence interval of 7726 ± 68 years. According to scaling relations that use the surface rupture length, if we assume that the La Alberca-Teremendo fault moves tectonically, it could generate earthquakes with maximum magnitudes of Mw between 6.7 and 7.3, however because of the active volcanic processes in the area, we could expect moderate volcano-tectonic earthquakes (Mw 4–5.5) rather than catastrophic ones.
