Soft-sediment deformation structures induced by seismic activity in the San Pedro el Alto area, Acambay graben, Mexico

Abstract: Soft-sediment deformation structures identified in lacustrine sediments of the San Pedro el Alto area, within the Acambay graben, Mexico, can be attributed to Pleistocene-Holocene seismic events. The analysis of these deformation structures, seismites, is a key tool for the characterization of parameters such as the intensity and magnitude of the events, and the measurement of the affected area. Analysis of the shape, distribution, abundance and genesis of these secondary structures in lacustrine basins, also … Show more

“…The fine-grained composition is most typical for SSDS induced by sediment liquefaction (Üner, 2014;Paudel, 2015;Velázquez-Bucio and Garduño-Monroy, 2018). Pseudonodules form when the overlying sand layer is detached and sinks to form isolated kidney-shaped bodies encased in the underlying sediment (i.e., it is a gravity-driven mechanism).…”

“…This cross‐stratal mixing can occur in numerous ways and at different scales. For example, earthquake‐related seismic deformation can produce 5–20 cm wide cracks in the host sediment that are later filled (Velázquez‐Bucio & Garduño‐Monroy, ). Chemically, limestone dissolution can generate voids that range from millimetres to decimetres.…”

“…This omission is a serious problem considering the population increase in central Mexico. So far, paleoseismic studies have been concentrated in the eastern part of the MAFS, around the epicenter of the 1912 Acambay earthquake (Lacan et al, 2018;Velázquez-Bucio and Garduño-Monroy, 2018;Ortuño et al, 2019), leaving the western portion of the system with scarce information about recurrence intervals and potential magnitudes (Garduño-Monroy et al, 2009;Singh et al, 2012;Suter, 2016). This information is required for a reliable seismic hazard assessment throughout the system.…”
