Soft Modes Responsible for α-β and β-γ Phase Transitions of KIO3 Crystals

Abstract: The α-β and β-γ phase transitions of KIO3 crystals have been studied by Raman scattering. The two lowest optical modes of 32 cm-1 and 38 cm-1 at -180°C show remarkable softening towards the β-γ transition temperature of 72°C. The third lowest mode of 63 cm-1 at -180°C also softens markedly towards the α-β transition temperature of 212°C. This mode shows a kink near the β-γ phase transition and a strong polarization dependence. These three soft modes strongly suggest that these two phase transitions have a disp… Show more

“…At temperature increase the symmetry changes in the sequence triclinic III 345.6 K monoclinic II 485 K trigonal I. The existence of these three phases is confirmed by studies investigating the temperature evolution of physical properties such as nuclear quadrupole resonance, Raman spectroscopy, pyroelectricity, birefringence, dielectric, elastic and piezoelectric properties [1,[7][8][9][10].…”

“…According to the structural investigation of Hamid 3) the number of unit molecules in the unit cell changes at T 1 and T 2 . In the Raman scattering experiment 9) it has been reported that three optical soft modes which are related to the successive phase transitions are found and the softening occurs at the Brillouin zone boundaries at T 1 and T 2 . Though clear soft mode was not observed at T 3 the results are consistent with our elastic measurements.…”

“…The phase transition at 130 • C reported by several authors is still questionable. 4) Investigations on the physical properties such as dielectric, 2,5) elelctro-optical, 6,7) piezoelectric properties, 6, 7) NQR 2) and Raman scatterng experiments 8,9) of KIO 3 have been reported. Although much data have been reported especially on the temperature dependences of dielectric constants, still there has been some discrepancies between them.…”

“…Over the past several years, as well as recently, considerable attention has been given to study iodate compounds owing to their interesting properties such as piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and nonlinear optical effects [1][2][3][4]. Some iodates have potential applications in the field of second harmonic generation [5].…”
