To improve the difficulty in wearing and uncomfortable pressure of the sports bra, shape memory polyurethane filaments (SMPUFs) were used to prepare seamless sports bras in this study. Five fabric samples with different stitch structures and yarn were prepared. Then shape memory sports bras were designed based on the properties of the different fabric samples and female body characteristics. SMPUFs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry for the thermal properties. Shape memory properties and mechanical properties of the SMPUFs, covered yarn and fabric samples were measured. Besides this, the moisture absorbency, permeability and thermal resistance of fabrics were tested. A pressure test system was set up and the pressure of the sports bras was investigated at different temperatures. The results showed that the transition temperature ( Ttrans) of the SMPUF was 27.33°C, which could be triggered by human skin temperature. The best shape fixity ratio of the fabric sample was 82.5% and the shape recovery ratio was 94.4%. The comfortable pressure of the shape memory sports bra at the mean human skin temperature of 34°C was 1.6–5.6 kPa.

Sports bras are an essential apparel for active women, but may exert excessive pressure that negatively affects thermoregulation, thermal comfort and wear sensation. This study measures skin temperature changes during short durations of exercise on a treadmill with different bra pressures. The results based on 21 female subjects (age: 27.2 ± 4.5 years old) show that bras with more pressure at the underband or shoulder straps do not cause statistically significant skin temperature changes during exercise (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, compared to the optimal bra fit, significant differences in bra-breast skin temperature are found during running, cooling down and sitting when the bra pressure is increased (p < 0.05), particularly under bra cup (T1) in this study. The FLIR thermal images can visualize the skin temperature changes at abdomen throughout the four activity stages. Subjective sensations of bra thermal comfort, pressure and breast support are assessed. Despite the increased pressure on the shoulders and chest wall, perceptions towards thermal comfort remain unchanged. The perceived pressure comfort and support sensation amongst the 4 bra conditions are comparable. Interestingly, positive sensations of pressure comfort and breast support are perceived with a tight-fitting sports bra during treadmill exercise. High pressures induced by sports bras (>4 kPa) that habitually considered harmful to the human body may not lead to wear discomfort but enhance bra support sensation and a sense of security to the wearers.

Brassiere straps are commonly perceived as one of the most irritating and uncomfortable components of a brassiere, especially for women with heavier breasts. This study aimed to design and developed auxetic structures to enhance the ergonomics of intimate apparel. The brassiere straps were developed by using textured polyester and nylon yarns with auxetic weave structures in two different widths. Tests were conducted to evaluate Poisson’s ratio, tensile strength, and pressure distribution properties and overall ergonomics of developed straps. Subjective analysis was also performed by conducting wear trials. The development of polyester straps yielded excellent results compared to nylon. In the subjective analysis, the selected polyester sample consistently performed better than others, significantly enhancing ergonomics comfort, fit, and psychological comfort according to respondents’ preferences. Based on the results, Auxetic structure can be a better alternative for brassiere straps in active wear to avoid related health problems and to improve women’s experience.
