Soft Elasticity in Main Chain Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Abstract: Main chain liquid crystal elastomers exhibit several interesting phenomena, such as three different regimes of elastic response, unconventional stress-strain relationship in one of these regimes, and the shape memory effect. Investigations are beginning to reveal relationships between their macroscopic behavior and the nature of domain structure, microscopic smectic phase structure, relaxation mechanism, and sample history. These aspects of liquid crystal elastomers are briefly reviewed followed by a summary o… Show more

“…With respect to conventional liquid crystals, the elastic moduli of SUP–surfactant liquid crystals are larger than for reported smectic liquid crystals (see Table S1, Supporting Information) . We found that the elastic values are comparable to those of liquid‐crystal elastomers, where the mesogens again have to be crosslinked by polymerization to achieve elastic behavior . Due to the modular assembly of the SUP surfactant complexes their mechanical properties can be easily tuned by varying the lengths of the alkyl chains of the surfactants or the molecular weight of the supercharged polypeptide backbone (Figure c,e).…”

“…The differences in these classes of polymers were recently reviewed in detail with regards to properties of mechanical actuators . Also, these liquid crystal elastomers have been the subject of several reviews and books . Furthermore, it should be noted that liquid crystal elastomers are often divided into subclasses by the location of the mesogen within the polymer network, either main‐chain or side‐chain.…”
