Soft bottom macrofauna of an All Taxa Biodiversity Site: Hornsund (77○N, Svalbard)

Abstract: Abstract:Hornsund, an Arctic fjord in the west coast of Spitsbergen (Svalbard), was se− lected as All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) site under EU 5th Framework Concerted Action BIOMARE (2000)(2001)(2002), especially due to its pristine, undisturbed natural charac− ter. On the base of large material (89 stations located throughout the fjord and 129 Van Veen grab samples) collected during cruises of RV Oceania in July in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007 and literature search a comprehensive list of species recor… Show more

“…Both fjords have been intensively sampled for the last 35 years and can be treated as model polar fjord ecosystems. Information about the benthic diversity of those basins were recently summarized by Kędra et al (2010a) and Siciński et al (2011) as a result of two large polar marine programs: Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (MarBEF) and Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML).…”

“…An early list of polychaetes in the shallow depths of the Hornsund fjord was provided by Gromisz (1992). Recently, an updated species list is included in Kędra et al (2010b).…”

“…Altogether they have collected at least 300 benthic samples collected in all habitats and depth zones present in the fjord (Włodarska-Kowalczuk and Pearson 2004;Kaczmarek et al 2005;Kędra et al 2011), and have never recorded the presence of lacydoniid worms (Włodarska-Kowalczuk, personal communication). Neither has it been present in the second most extensively studied fjord, the west Spitsbergen fjord: Hornsund (Kędra et al 2010). Also, the marine invertebrate species list for Svalbard waters prepared by Palerud et al (2004), which comprises 137 published and unpublished works about marine macrofauna in Svalbard waters, does not include any lacydoniids.…”
