Sodium-sulphur batteries for naval applications

Abstract: Since 1981 the Electrochemistry Group of TNO carries out a research program for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) with respect to batteries and fuel cells. Part of this Advanced Batteries program was the evaluation of possible alternatives €or the nowadays applied batteries in conventional dieselelectric submarines and ships. From this evaluation the high temperature sodium-sulphur battery proved to be the most promising candidate. To investigate the feasibility of the sodium-sulphur battery for naval applicat… Show more

“…In order to maintain the power balance of multi-energy systems in AESs, ESSs are utilized to compensate for the power fluctuations that are caused by renewable sources and ship loads. ESSs provide operational benefits in terms of power quality and fuel cost (Posthumus et al, 1996;Monti et al, 2008). The charging/discharging behavior of on-board battery is given below (Wen et al, 2017;Lan et al, 2019).…”

“…Their analysis indicated that a sodium sulfur battery could be a financially competitive with the diesel fuel cost in 1979 [11]. Similarly, there has been research on sodium sulfur battery for naval applications [12] and space applications [13] in the early 1980's as well.…”
