Sodium, Potassium and Iodine Intake, in a National Adult Population Sample of the Republic of Moldova

Abstract: In the Republic of Moldova, more than half of all deaths due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD). Excess salt (sodium) and inadequate potassium intakes are associated with high CVD. Moreover, salt iodisation is the preferred policy to prevent iodine deficiency and associated disorders. “…As the habitual potassium intake in most countries worldwide is low [ 6 , 40 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ], an average increase of approximately 40% per day (as found in our meta-analysis) would lead to the achievement of the target of approximately ~4500 mg/day (~90 mmol/day of urinary excretion).
