Sodium alginate/Na+‐rectorite composite films: Preparation, characterization, and properties

Abstract: Rectorite (REC), one kind of layered silicates, has been applied to polymers to improve their properties. The sodium alginate (SA) layered silicate is a new option to modify the properties of polysaccharides. In this article, SA was modified by Na þ -rectorite (Na þ REC). The chemical structures and microstructures of Na þ REC and Na þ REC modified SA (SA/Na þ REC) were analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of SA/Na þ REC composites were observed by u… Show more

“…The peaks at 3443 and 3641 cm −1 are attributed to the bending vibration of the hydrogen band of interlaminar water and the hydroxyl stretching of SiOH (Yang, Liang, Zhang, He, & Wang, 2009), while the hydroxyl bending of water appeared at 1641 cm −1 . The peaks at 1047 cm −1 are associated with the Si O stretching vibration, while the peaks in the region 500-580 cm −1 are assigned to the Si O bending vibration.…”

“…Composite materials which combine sodium alginate and clays are currently being investigated in applications as diverse as drug delivery (Pongjanyakul and Puttipipatkhachorn, 2007;Wang et al, 2013;Iliescu et al, 2011), heavy metal adsorption (Li et al, 2011) and nano-composite films (Yang et al, 2009). Several studies have also discussed the use of alginate in agricultural applications where the alginate-clay interactions are used to increase the stability of soil aggregates or to aid plant growth (Quastel and Webley, 1947;Emerson, 1956;Schneider, 1977;Orts et al, 2007;Bernu et al, 2010).…”

“…The SA solution was slowly mixed into the Na + REC suspending liquid using homogenizer for 5 min, then glycerine (10%, w/w based on SA) as the plasticizer was dropped into the mixture. The mixture was stirred with a high speed shear mixer for 3 h and salivated on a dust-free glass plate with a uniform thickness for curing by a procedure of 50 • C for 5 h. After dryness, the resultant material is milled to get SA/Na + REC composite with a particle size in the range of 160-200 mesh (Yang et al, 2009). …”

“…As an extension of our previous work on SA/Na + REC composite (Yang, Liang, Zhang, He, & Wang, 2009), SA/Na + REC-g-PAA composite superabsorbent was obtained by 60 Co␥-irradiation. The mechanism of graft copolymerization via 60 Co␥ irradiation was preliminary studied.…”
