Sodium Alginate/Gelatin Microbeads-Intercalated With Kaolin Nanoclay for Emerging Drug Delivery in Wilson’s Disease

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to fabricate and evaluate the drug release studies using Sodium Alginate (SA) and Gelatin (GE) microbeads intercalated with Kaolin (KA) nanoclay for sustained release of D-Penicillamine (D-PA). Methods: Sodium alginate/gelatin/Kaolin blend microbeads were prepared by an extrusion method by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinker. The obtained microbeads were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) a… Show more

“…Sodium alginate (SA) is natural, an anionic linear polysaccharide when it combines with water it forms a gluey gum. This biopolymer is made up of linear unbranched copolymers that contain alternating blocks of (1-4)-linked β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and (1-4)-linked α-Lglucuronic acid (G) residues 12 . Alginates are considered biocompatible, biodegradable, chemical versatility and non-toxicity for medical applications.…”

“…Mt/Mα = kt n ................. (12) Where Mt and Mα are the cumulative amount of CT released at time t and equilibrium time, respectively, k is a kinetic constant relating to the hydrogel system, and n is the diffusional exponent which suggests the nature of the release mechanism. The n values are determined from the slope of the plot of ln (Mt/Mα) versus lnt.…”

“…From the last few decades, clay minerals are used in solid and semisolid pharmaceutical preparations for topical and oral administration, as well as cosmetic formulations [7,8]. Kaolin is a hydrated two-dimensional (2D) aluminosilicate clay mineral, used as active ingredients due to their uninjured bioactivity and therapeutic effects.…”

“…Sodium alginate (SA) is anionic polysaccharide, composed of two different kinds of hexuronic acid residues such as β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-guluronic acid (G) arranged as random or in an alternating manner [5,7]. It has several biomedical and biotechnological applications due to its specific properties such as hydrophilicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility and non-toxicity [8][9][10] Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-co-vinyl acetate (PVP-co-VAc) is a water soluble block copolymer consisting of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in its structure, which facilitates the increased solubilisation of drugs [11].…”
