The formula 'care = organisation -I-physical labour -Iemotional labour' identifies component parts of 'carework' as they were observed at a hospice. A comparison between women's domestic carework and that of the hospice nurses is made firstly to clarify the component elements of care and secondly to show how the interrelation and balance of the components differs in the two settings. It is argued that family care has been a model for hospice care but that division of labour in hospices, which replicates hospital labour-divisions, results in an inflexibility in hospice care which is incompatible with the 'family' model. In the final section it is suggested that emotional labour is likely to be increasingly recognised as part of health care but that the concept of 'total care' needs to be questioned.

This paper revisits Strong's thesis of`sociological imperialism' some 20 years on in order to assess its relevance to present day developments within and beyond the sociology of health and illness. The thesis, it is suggested, continues to raise a number of key sociological issues of more or less abiding importance, particularly in the light of recent Foucauldian and postmodern critiques of medicine, the body and disease. This in turn paves the way for a further series of critical reflections on the limits of constructionism in particular and the dilemmas of the sociological enterprise in general. Revisiting these issues from time to time, it is concluded, is indeed an instructive exercise: a reminder perhaps, welcome or otherwise, of the limits of our own disciplinary claims on the world and our place within it.

Η εμπιστοσύνη αποτελεί μια μάλλον αφανή έννοια στην κοινωνιολογία της υγείας και της ασθένειας. Ωστόσο, η προσεκτική ανάλυση μπορεί να αποκαλύψει τις διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις απέναντι στην εμπιστοσύνη στη φροντίδα υγείας, ειδικά σε ό,τι αφορά τη σχέση της ιατρικής με το κοινό. Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να προσδιορίσει αυτές τις διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις στο έργο του Talcott Parsons και στις πρώιμες θεωρίες των επαγγελμάτων στις θεωρίες της επαγγελ- ματοποίησης και της ιατρικοποίησης, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του έργου του Eliot Freidson- στα έργα του Michel Foucault και στη φουκωική παράδοση στην κοινωνιολογία της υγείας- και στις πρόσφατες μελέτες που εστιάζουν στο ενδεχόμενο της ύφεσης της δημόσιας εμπιστοσύνης προς την ιατρική. Οι σχέσεις εμπιστοσύνης είναι εγγενώς δυναμικές και, καθώς διαμορφώνεται ένα νέο περιβάλλον παροχής φροντίδας υγείας, οι βάσεις της εμπιστοσύνης μεταβάλλονται και το ακαδημαϊκό ενδιαφέρον για την έννοια αυξάνεται.
