Portable energy storage will be a key challenge if electric vehicles (EVs) become a large part of our future transportation system. A big barrier to market uptake for EVs is driving range. Range can be further limited if heating and air conditioning systems are powered by the EV's batteries. The use of electricity for HVAC can be minimized if a thermal storage system, a "thermal battery," can be substituted as the energy source to provide sufficient cabin heating and cooling. The aim of this project was to model, design, and fabricate a low-cost, modular thermal battery for EVs. The constructed thermal battery employs a phase change material erythritol (a sugar alcohol commonly used as artificial sweetener) as the storage medium sealed in an insulated, stainless steel container. At a total prototype cost of $$311/kW-h, the system is roughly half the price of lithium ion batteries. Heat exchange to the thermal battery is accomplished via water (or low viscosity engine oil), which is pumped through a helical winding of copper tubing. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used to determine the geometry (winding radius and number of coils) and flow conditions necessary to create adequate heat transfer. Testing of the fabricated design indicates that the prototype thermal battery module can store enough heat and discharge it fast enough to meet the demand of cruising passenger vehicle for up to 1 h on a cold day. The battery is capable of storing nearly 100 W-h/kg and can provide a specific power density of 30 W/kg. The storage density is competitive with lithium ion batteries, but work is needed to improve the power density.

This case study investigates whether collective entrepreneurial team cognition remains consistent throughout all stage processes when setting up a large-scale, distributed research infrastructure. A new “action phase model” has been devised, known as the “4 I’s of entrepreneurship”, with each “I” elucidating the entrepreneurial rationale behind various stages of the creation process: Intention, Initiation, Implementation and Introspection. The case investigated was BBMRI.se (BioBanking and Molecular Resource Infrastructure in Sweden) – a Swedish large-scale distributed research infrastructure aimed at harmonizing biobanking standards. Managers and key personnel involved in founding and/or operating the organization were interviewed. The results showed there was agreement regarding the need for the research infrastructure, while there were disagreeing perceptions of what the organization should be doing and regarding the difficulties it had faced. These developments would ultimately lead to BBMRI.se’s demise. The homogenous mindset would begin to dissipate once the Initiation stage was reached and worsened throughout the Implementation stage. The results indicate that BBMRI.se’s managerial structure, personal ambitions and lack of transparency and communication were key contributors to its ultimate failure. The implications highlight the risk of fragmented motivations as collective entrepreneurs turn their ambition into reality, if given too much autonomy.

This study aim to examine the channel flow of a couple stress Casson fluid. The flow is generated due to the motion of the plate at $$y=0$$ y = 0 , while the plate at $$y=d$$ y = d is at rest. This physical phenomenon is derived in terms of partial differential equations. The subjected governing PDE’s are non-dimensionalized with the help of dimensionless variables. The dimensionless classical model is generalized by transforming it to the time fractional model using Fick’s and Fourier’s Laws. The general fractional model is solved by applying the Laplace and Fourier integral transformation. Furthermore, the parametric influence of various physical parameters like Casson parameter, couple stress parameter, Grashof number, Schmidt number and Prandtl number on velocity, temperature, and concentration distributions is shown graphically and discussed. The heat transfer rate, skin friction, and Sherwood number are calculated and presented in tabular form. It is worth noting that the increasing values of the couple stress parameter $$\lambda$$ λ deaccelerate the velocity of Couple stress Casson fluid.
