Socioecological factors potentially associated with participation in physical activity and sport: A longitudinal study of adolescent girls

“…Interestingly, while a number of studies examined parental and friends' influences on children' PA, these studies obtained information either from parents only [17, 18, 22, 23] or from children only [15, 16, 2427], with no studies obtaining information from both parents and children. By administering instruments measuring the same constructs to both children and parents, researchers can investigate whether parents and children perceive parental practices in different ways, and how these perceptions correlate with PA behavior [28].…”

Moreover, girls might receive less social support from their parents and peers to do sports and exercise than boys [28, 29] which might lead to higher OS dropout and nonparticipation rates. A higher OS decline and dropout among girls compared to boys was also observed in other studies [9, 30].…”

“…While Strong et al (2005) emphasizes the supportive nature of an active lifestyle in society, Eime et al (2015) underlines the significance of composing an effective and widespread sports environment for this aim, which can be said to refer to the mental preparation phase. However, in the name of the popularization of modern sports understanding, it is essential to promote a strong physical background, and an extensive and accessible facility network.…”
