Sociodemographic Factors and Oral Health Conditions Related to the Impact on the Quality of Life of Adolescents

Objective: To evaluate the oral hygiene level and periodontal condition of adolescents aged 15-19 years and socioeconomic factors. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 630 adolescents from public schools randomly selected in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. For data collection, a form containing socioeconomic variables and those related to oral hygiene was used. The oral hygiene level was measured through the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) and periodontal condition was evaluated by the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Data were descriptively and inferentially analyzed using the chi-square test, adopting significance level of 5%. Results: Adolescents were mostly females (59.5%), aged 16 years (32.4%), non-white (77.8%), with family income lower than US $ 612.00 (55.1%), with parental schooling of up to high school (50%). Periodontal condition showed no significant association with any of the socioeconomic factors (p> 0.05). All participants reported using toothbrush; however, the control of interproximal plaque with flossing was reported by only 44.1%, being higher among females (p = 0.028), and its use has been associated with periodontal status (p = 0.026). The oral hygiene level was satisfactory for 59.7% of adolescents, while CPI showed that only 1.6% of them had healthy periodontium and gingival bleeding (34.4%) and presence of dental calculus (37, 8%) were the most prevalent alterations. Conclusion: Adolescents showed satisfactory oral hygiene condition; however, there was a high prevalence of gingival bleeding and dental calculus. Periodontal condition was associated with flossing; however, association with socioeconomic factors was not observed.

Emergency Dental Care of Children and Adolescents in Basic Health Unit and Emergency Care Unit

Objective: To evaluate the factors related to the dental emergency care of children and adolescents in Basic Health Units (UBS) and Emergency Care Units (UPA) affiliated with the public dental network of Curitiba, Brazil. Material and Methods: Crosssectional study that evaluated 1,012 emergency cases in individuals aged up to 17 years old and with a permanent record in the Unified Health System of Curitiba. Demographic data of individuals and of services were taken from electronic medical records. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test and chi-square test for linear trend (α = 0.05), estimating the prevalence ratio (PR) (95%CI). Results: Of the total of emergency cases, 68.2% and 31.8% were of children and adolescents, respectively. UBS accounted for 89.7% of the cases while UPA represented 10.3%, and 12.2% of the treatments were characterized as first access to the system. Adolescents used UPAs for emergency care more often than children (PR = 1.84; 95%CI: 1.28-2.64). Among children, those with more than 1 year since the last appointment used UPAs for emergency care more often (PR = 1.86; 95%CI: 1.09-3.17). Adolescents for whom emergency care was characterized as first access to the system used UPAs more often (PR = 2.16; 95%CI: 1.04-4.46). The proximity between the UBS of origin and the UPA was associated with greater UPA utilization by both groups. Conclusion: UBSs accounted for most of the dental emergency treatments. Children and adolescents with a poorer connection with UBSs and those who lived near an UPA had a higher prevalence of UPA utilization for emergency care.

Factors Associated with Toothache in Patients Affected by Hereditary Coagulopathies

Objective: To determine a probabilistic model that represents the likelihood of the event Dental Pain to occur in Brazilians patients affected by hereditary coagulopathies. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, information on use and access to dental services, oral morbidity, self-perceived oral health and behavioral health habits were obtained through semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed by means of logistic regression. Results: High prevalence of dental caries was observed for children aged 1-5 years (50%) and for adolescents aged 13-19 years (66%). Cumulative pattern of dental caries in the age groups of 20-35 years and 36-59 years was observed. Most patients did not report pain in the last six months prior to the survey (24.5%). It was observed that searching for dental care for the last time in case of localized pain (OR=26.7), for feeling uncomfortable when brushing teeth (OR=7.3) and difficulty searching for health professionals, not only the dentist (OR 3.7) was considered risk factors for the determination of Dental Pain diagnosis. However, if the patient has mild hemophilia A (OR=0.21), this likelihood decreases, being thus a protective factor. Conclusion: Patients affected by hereditary coagulopathies have high prevalence of caries, indicating the cumulative nature of this disease, which suggests the symptomatic effect of Dental Pain.
