Sociodemographic and disease-related determinants of return to work among women with breast cancer: a German longitudinal cohort study

“…An exploratory survey on work experience including breast cancer patients from Germany but also UK and France found that the number of full-time employees dropped from 54% before diagnosis to 32% 1-5 years after adjuvant chemotherapy (Braybrooke et al, 2015). Finally, another study in Germany with 577 patients diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 observed that 35.2% of the patients did not return to work within 40 weeks of surgery (Heuser et al, 2018). Overall, diseasefree breast cancer survivors may need more support to fully return to working life.…”

“…While long-term work outcomes have been analysed, little is known about how cancer survivors evaluate these outcomes in terms of job satisfaction and the voluntary nature of their employment development 22. Hence, more longitudinal studies exploring RTW,23 its long-term outcomes and their evaluation from the cancer survivors’ perspective are needed, as work contributes to the social and psychological well-being of cancer survivors 21 24…”
