Socio-territorial Disputes and Violence on Fracking Land in Vaca Muerta, Argentina

Abstract: With the discovery of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits and the consequent expansion of the commodity frontiers in the past decade, a series of territorial disputes over the geological formation called Vaca Muerta has arisen in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, between oil companies, Mapuche indigenous communities, pastoralists, and the state. A general panorama of territorial conflict, state and parastate violence, tension, and negotiation among various actors in conflict in the department of Añelo sugges… Show more

“…Some have highlighted the risks of salmon farming (Araos et al this issue; Bandiarán, 2018). Other scholars have drawn attention to movements responding to mining and oil extractivism (Hadad et al., 2020). A sizeable literature now exists on the Patagonia Sin Represas (Patagonian without Dams) movement that contested the installation of hydropower dams on the Baker and Pascua Rivers in Chile (McAllister, 2020; Schaeffer, 2017; Silva, 2016).…”

“…For example, many corporations maintain armed ‘security’ forces and/or work closely with states’ police and military personnel to ‘secure’ their operations (Böhm & Pascucci, 2020 ; Schmalz et al, 2022 ). The rapidly increasing number of assassinations and criminal prosecutions of local environmental defenders (Dunlap, 2021 ; Hadad et al 2021 ; Tran et al 2020 ), also in territories occupied by ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ industries (Dunlap & Correa Acre, 2021 ; Schmalz et al, 2022 ), are bleak examples of this brute OWW violence.…”
