a b s t r a c tThis paper investigates whether education buffers the impact of physical disability on psychological distress. It further investigates what makes education helpful, by examining whether cognitive ability and occupational class can explain the buffering effect of education. Two waves of the 1958 British National Child Development Study are used to test the hypothesis that the onset of a physical disability in early adulthood (age 23 to 33) has a smaller effect on psychological distress among higher educated people. In total 423 respondents (4.6%) experienced the onset of a physical disability between the ages of 23 and 33. We find that a higher educational level cushions the psychology impact of disability. Cognitive ability and occupational class protect against the effect of a disability too. The education buffer arises in part because individuals with a higher level of education have more cognitive abilities, but the better social position of those with higher levels of education appears to be of greater importance. Implications of these findings for the social gradient in health are discussed.

ÖzetTıp alanında toplum anlayışımız geliştikçe, sağlık değişken-lerinin sosyal ve ekonomik belirteçlerle olan ilişkisi de dikkatimizi çekmektedir. Bu nedenle, medikal araştırmalarda sağlığın bu belirteçlerden nasıl etkilendiğini inceleme isteğimiz de hızla artmaktadır. Ancak akademik kaygılarımız arasına görece yeni katılan bu bilimsel alandaki deneyimlerimiz halen oldukça sınırlıdır. Kompozit ölçekler her ne kadar gelişmiş ülkelerde yaygın olarak kullanılsalar da ülkemizin bölgelere göre heterojen yapısı nedeniyle bu ölçeklerin ülkemize uyarlanarak kullanılması zor görünmektedir. Proxy sorular ise çalışmalarda sıkça kullanılmalarına karşın araştırmacılar bu soruları sosyoekonomik seviye ile ilişkilendirirken zorlanmaktadırlar. Diğer taraftan değişen toplumsal yapının gereği olarak sosyoekonomik seviye belirlerken kullandığımız değer yargılarımız da hızla değişmektedir. Örneğin 10 yıl önce sadece gelir düzeyi ve eğitim seviyesi sorgulamak sosyoekonomik seviye hakkında yeterli bilgi verirken, bugün gelinen noktada ikamet bölgeleri ve hatta arkadaş çevresi dahi değer kazanmış görünmektedir. Bununla birlikte doğru sorulmuş örnek bazı soruların elde olması bu konudaki kaygıları belirgin olarak azaltacaktır. SummarySince our understanding of the society in the field of medicine evolves, the relation of socioeconomic markers with parameters of health attracts our attention. Accordingly, our desire to investigate how heath is affected by these markers is also increasing rapidly. However our experiences in this scientific field, which is recently added to our academic concerns, are still quite limited. While Composite scales are widely used in developed countries, the heterogeneous structure of the population living in different regions in our country makes it difficult to use this scales. On the other hand proxy questions are frequently used in the Turkish literature, but there are difficulties in associating these questions with the actual regarding socioeconomic status of the investigated population. Changes in the demands of the population are also forcing to changes in our value of judgement in evaluating the socioeconomic status. While ten years ago the assessment of monthly income and educational status was enough for the evaluation of socioeconomic status, today even the chosen residential areas and social circle became important. Additionally having correctly formatted proxy questions on hand will decrease researchers concerns regarding this issue. The aim of this article is to improve our understanding towards analyzing relations between health concerns and socioeconomic variables and to help in achieving correct interferences and results.
