Socio-cultural determinants of physical activity across the life course: a ‘Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity’ (DEDIPAC) umbrella systematic literature review

Abstract: ObjectiveRegular physical activity (PA) reduces the risk of disease and premature death. Knowing factors associated with PA might help reducing the disease and economic burden caused by low activity. Studies suggest that socio-cultural factors may affect PA, but systematic overviews of findings across the life course are scarce. This umbrella systematic literature review (SLR) summarizes and evaluates available evidence on socio-cultural determinants of PA in children, adolescents, and adults.MethodsThis manus… Show more

“…Children and adolescents have higher PA needs than adults, and these are more difficult to achieve during the quarantine period, also due to the influence of home environment (11). Both physical and social environmental factors operating within the home space are indeed important influences on SB and PA, especially for the pediatric population (12). Regarding adolescents, another point that warrants careful vigilance concerns the risks associated with increased total screen time, including the total hours spent on computer, TV and video gaming.…”

“…Approximately two-thirds of all studies and five out of six longitudinal studies showed a statistically significant positive relationship between income inequality and the risk of depression. Moreover, because societal context is paramount for understanding access, motivation and engagement with structured physical activity [68,69], cultural specificities may be important in understanding why, how and how often people have access to and engage with supervised exercise programs [70,71]. In the case of depression, country of origin, ethnicity and cultural differences are suspected of playing a major role in the patients' symptoms and on the behaviors of their family aggregates [72].…”

“…performed in order to identify potential individual and socioeconomic correlates of CRF 8,14,16 . Potential interpersonal correlates of CRF were derived from evidence regarding the association of these factors and PA 12,27,28 . Based on this evidence, we developed a conceptual framework that depicts potential interrelations (Fig.…”
