Socially relevant and inclusive operations management

Abstract: Many parts of the world are experiencing extreme weather events, energy poverty, food insecurity, and lack of access to basic healthcare. Moreover, concerns over socioeconomic, gender, and racial inequalities are growing. These socially relevant issues are ripe for analysis and improvement using an operations management lens. In this paper, we review some of the relevant research advancements made in the last decade, and identify future research directions on these important topics. In particular, we focus on … Show more

“…Diversity inclusion has become an important element in the context of sustainable operations. Within the broader operations area, research scholars have increasingly emphasized that inclusion has become a key element of operations (Kalkanci et al., 2019; Sunar & Swaminathan, 2022), along with an increasing focus on issues that include race (Cui et al., 2020), gender (Cui et al., 2022; Pierce et al., 2021; Plambeck & Ramdas, 2020; Tang, 2022), and disability (Narayanan & Terris, 2020). In this context, the United Nations SDGs 8 and 10 also emphasize the notion of reducing inequality.…”

“…This paper also has societal implications when firms implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their SCs (Monteiro et al , 2018; Silva and Figueiredo, 2020; Sunar and Swaminathan, 2022). For instance, SDG 12 can be pursued, mainly targeting 12.6 that states the need to “encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle” (UN, 2021).…”

“…The sustainable OM literature has evolved to address many issues related to the low‐carbon economy via GHG emissions reduction and the creation of greener supply chains (Atasu et al., 2020; Deshpande & Swaminathan, 2020; Sunar & Swaminathan, 2022). The literature in this area is extensive and broad.…”

“…(2019); Atasu et al. (2020), and Sunar and Swaminathan (2022) have discussed GHG emissions reduction and disclosure, climate policy, renewable energy, electricity, waste management, and new products, technologies, and business models, among others. We focus our review on the most relevant OM and supply chain research in GHG emissions reduction and disclosure, specifically carbon leakage and emissions allocation, and supply chain design and governance (see Table A.1 in the Appendix in the Supporting Information for a summary of the literature review table).…”
