Socially Open-Ended Problems for Enriching Student Learning with Mathematical Models and Social Values

Abstract: Our society is increasingly dependent on technologies such as in the life sciences and information technologies. The technologies create alternatives and the choice among alternatives is guided by what the individual values. On the other hand, Bishop (1991) pointed out the danger that the general public and students understand that mathematics learning is regarded in many countries as being unreal and value-free, mainly because of the abstract nature of mathematics. This gap between social reality and students… Show more

“…The Open-ended learning method emphasizes Open-ended problems to students so that their mathematical analytical thinking ability can be developed through problem-solving, various techniques, method, or strategies to find solutions (Baba & Shimada, 2019;Bernard & Chotimah, 2018;H. T. Damayanti & Sumardi, 2018;Kurniawan et al, 2018;Lubis et al, 2019;Sapta et al, 2019;Wulansari, 2019), appreciates students' answers, and pay attention to their cognitive domain (Magelo et al, 2019).…”

“…In this research, we have built a theoretical framework for SCOEPs that extends socially open-ended problems (Baba & Shimada, 2019), to construct a model curriculum for critical mathematics education in engaging with trans-scientific problems. Based on this theoretical framework, it is initially implementable in the school mathematics curriculum in Japan.…”
