Social work and gender: An argument for practical accounts

Abstract: This article contributes to the debate on gender and social work by examining dominant approaches within the field. Anti-discriminatory, woman-centered and intersectional accounts are critiqued for reliance upon both reification and isolation of gender. Via examination of poststructural, queer and trans theories within social work, the author then presents accounts based upon structural/materialist, ethnomethodological and discursive theories, in order to open up debates about conceptualization of gender. “…Whilst there has been a major shift in legislation and policy that can help to remove obstacles for gay and lesbian applicants, it is evident that further work needs to be done to dislodge the social work application process from its hetero-gendered bias. There is an ongoing need to draw upon critical perspectives, such as those located within wider poststructural, queer, and feminist theory as it is these which seek to disturb heterosexual hegemony and essentialist notions of gender (Brown and Cocker, 2011;Hicks, 2008aHicks, , 2013Hicks, , 2015Cocker and Hafford-Letchfield, 2014).…”

“…An example of this is referring to social work as a female-dominated field, because female social workers outnumber men. The complex relationship between gender and job roles, advancement and influence means that in reality the presence of a female majority in the field does not necessarily translate to dominating the profession (Hicks, 2015). Because gender encompasses such a complex set of social and cultural roles which can influence social work practice, it can be difficult to effectively address in research unless it is the specific focus of the study.…”

“…As recently as 2015 and as early as the 1920s (Struthers, 1983), researchers have noted that while the majority of social workers are women, men disproportionately occupy more senior roles (Hicks, 2015). This inequality means that despite the smaller number of men in social work, men have access to greater institutional power, a factor which could influence what concerns are given weight and how changes are made in the field.…”
