Land and forest fires in peatland areas in Indonesia have a widespread negative impact on surrounding communities. Possible vulnerabilities relate to economic, social, ecological, livelihoods, and environmental vulnerability. This study aimed to assess household vulnerability due to land and forest fires in peatland areas in Ogan Komering Ilir District in South Sumatra and observe changes in peat ecosystems in those areas. The study was conducted in three peatland hydrological units (PHUs)—(1) PHU Sungai Sugihan–Sungai Lumpur; (2) PHU Sungai Sibumbung–Sungai Batok; and (3) PHU Sungai Saleh–Sungai Sugihan—covering 300 households as samples. Primary data were collected through structured interviews and analyzed descriptively. The analysis revealed the following: (1) PHU Sungai Sibumbung–Sungai Batok had the highest score for livelihood vulnerability and climate change but the lowest score for social, economic, and ecological vulnerability; (2) PHU Sungai Saleh–Sungai Sugihan had the highest score for economic and ecological vulnerability but the lowest score for livelihood vulnerability; (3) PHU Sungai Sugihan–Sungai Lumpur had the highest score for social vulnerability but lowest score for climate change vulnerability; and (4) the number of household members, toddlers, and elderly, and all economic indicators except land ownership, contributed relatively similarly to social vulnerability in all PHUs.

Urban areas often experience land cover changes. Banjarbaru is one of several cities in Indonesia that has experienced land changes. The relocation of the administrative center of Banjarmasin City to Banjarbaru City led to the development of settlements. One spatial analysis carried out to examine the phenomenon of land change is remote sensing techniques. The method that can be used is the Land Change Modeler from MOLUSCE in QGIS. This model uses the CAM (Cellular Automata Markov) method to identify land cover change and predict land cover distribution. CAM can understand and predict land change patterns by considering land use, vegetation, and cell spatial interactions. This modeling is based on land cover data for 2015 and 2020 and several supporting parameters such as DEM data and distance to roads. Based on the modeling results from 2015 and 2020, Banjarbaru City experienced a change in built-up land, with most of it occurring in the center of Banjarbaru City. Based on the Markov Chain method by looking at land changes in the previous year, the development of built-up land increased by about 8% of the Banjarbaru City area of 32917.41 hectares. Based on the prediction results, the development of built-up land is centered in the middle of Banjarbaru City, such as North and South Banjarbaru Districts, due to the development of residential development.Keywords: Land Cover, Land Change Modeller, Cellular Automata, Markov Chain

Every year, land fires on peatlands in South Kalimantan occur, primarily during the dry season. Society and local authority preparation is necessary in communicating to land burning in order to lower the probability of land fires and their impact—data collection using interviews and FGDs. The number of respondents interviewed was 28, who came from the Regional Disaster Management Agency or Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD) of Banjarbaru, Forest Fire Control Brigade (Manggala Agni) of South Kalimantan Province, and the Fire Brigade of Banjarbaru. We also interviewed the Fire Care Community or Masyarakat Peduli Api (MPA), consisting of 3 village administrators and 15 MPA members. The results of the study result that fire care communities (MPA) and Fire Brigade or Barisan Pemadam Kebakaran (BPK) are always ready to be on standby in controlling land fires in their area. They cooperated with local governments to control and extinguish fires. Local governments are also on standby when fires occur. The provincial government’s infrastructure and water sources for blackouts, routinely conduct patrols and socialization with the community. However, various problems were faced, including limited water sources and infrastructure. Therefore, difficulties in dealing with disasters must be addressed to reduce the risk of broader peatland fires.
