Social Sustainability Assessment across Provinces in China: An Analysis of Combining Intermediate Approach with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Window Analysis

Abstract: There are two categories (i.e., radial and non-radial category) in conventional DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis). Recently, intermediate approach was put forward as a new third category. Intermediate approach is a newly proposed approach and there are quite limited related studies. This study contributes to the DEA studies by putting forward an analytical framework of combining intermediate approach and DEA window analysis along with the concepts of natural and managerial disposability. Such combination is quit… Show more

“…The DMUs lying on the frontier are efficient (score of 100%), while the others are inefficient (score of less than 100%). DEA has recently been widely applied to analyse the efficiency of energy consumption [34], agricultural production [35][36][37], and the tourism [38] and banking sectors, among others [39].…”

“…In [55], 20 studies were reviewed on the evaluation of environmental performance with the DEA model, and production was defined such that each DMU uses capital, labor, and energy to produce desirable outputs and inevitable pollutions. In this paper, each Chinese province is treated as a producer, and its public administrative performance is evaluated.…”

“…According to Zhang’s studies on the estimation of China’ s provincial capital stock, the depreciation rate was calculated to be 9.6% [56,57]. This value has been widely adopted in studies involving China’s provincial capital stock, such as in [13,55,58,59]. In this study, the provincial capital from 2000 to 2016 can thus be estimated, and the data over the last 5 years are adopted in this paper.Labor.…”

“…Thus, it should be underlined that the ideal window length has not been estimated, so that the ranking differences can become apparent between the ideal and other window widths. Window DEA regarding energy use and social characteristics has been perform for Chinese provinces, revealing efficiency gaps between them [55]. In that survey, a 2-year-window length has been selected for the energy use assessment for the years 2005-2014.…”
