Social status differences regulate the serotonergic system of a cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni

Abstract: Serotonin (5-HT) inhibits aggression and modulates aspects of sexual behaviour in many species, but the mechanisms responsible are not well understood. Here, we exploited the social dominance hierarchy of Astatotilapia burtoni to understand the role of the serotonergic system in long-term maintenance of social status. We identified three populations of 5-HT cells in dorsal and ventral periventricular pretectal nuclei (PPd, PPv), the nucleus of the paraventricular organ (PVO) and raphe. Dominant males had more … Show more

“…Of note, three genes related to sex differentiation in fishes ( parm1 [80], 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A-beta-like [81], and gadd45gamma [82]) and one to sex-linked behavior ( 5ht receptor 1a [81]) were found within 120 kb of each other on one of the short distal scaffolds (scaffold 185; S7 Table). …”

“…Among the various receptor subtypes that mediate 5HT function, the htr2a receptors have been shown to directly affect reproductive behaviour when manipulated in fish (Smith & Combs ), and higher mRNA levels are found in the telencephalon of subordinate males compared to dominant ones (Loveland et al . ). The htr2b receptor is expressed in several organs in puffer fish ( Tetraodon fluviatilis ), including in the heart and brain (De Lucchini et al .…”

“…We calculated the turnover rate using the ratio of concentration of metabolites on the concentration of the monoamine (Winberg et al 1991). A high ratio is indicative of elevated catabolic activity and has been interpreted as a high monoamine demand in the brain (Elipot et al 2014;Loveland et al 2014).…”

“…6B). These same regions contain serotonergic neurons in this species (Loveland et al, 2014), but double-label studies are needed to determine whether vglut3 is coexpressed in serotonergic cells. In these same sections, a small population of vglut3-expressing cells is found lateral and ventral to the SR (arrows in Fig.…”
