“…The foundations are already in place. Researchers have shown how parenting styles are socially constructed (Ambert 1994; Schaub 2010), how motherhood is socially constructed (Fonda, Eni, and Guimond 2013; Rousseau 2013), how fatherhood is socially constructed (Jordan 2014; Lupton and Barclay 1997), and how parents construct children’s identities even before birth (Afflerback et al 2014). Researchers have also documented how the transition to parenthood is constructed (LaRossa and Sinha 2006), focusing on participants who identified as expecting parents.…”

“…Dow's (2019) research on middle-class parenthood and the experience of Black mothering highlights the extensive strategizing necessary for preparing Black children to navigate a world where they are undervalued, even within middle-and high-class structures. Mothers of Black youth who experience involvement with law enforcement are often blamed for the undesirable outcomes following such interactions (Rousseau, 2013). Black mothers are held to impossible standards that require them to address the systemic racism that endangers the lives of their children (Elliot & Reid, 2016).…”

“…A Black feminist approach calls for the consideration of Black women’s lived experiences as members of two marginalized groups: women and Black Americans (Lindsay-Dennis, 2015). More specifically, according to Rousseau (2013) Black women are: of African descent in a society that works to benefit those of European descent, women in a patriarchal society that works to benefit men, and laborers within capitalist society that works to benefit owners. Much like the bioecological systems theory, Black feminist research calls for the consideration of multiple ecological entities but goes further by considering how each agent is structured with advantages and disadvantages.…”
