RESUMOObjetivou-se identificar nos indexadores Medline, PsycINFO, Lilacs e Scielo, no período de 2000 a 2005, estudos empíricos que abordem a fobia social e suas associações às habilidades sociais, visando a análise crítica das metodologias empregadas nesses estudos. Identificou-se 16 artigos, agrupados para análise em duas categorias: Modalidades Terapêuticas -Aplicação e Comparação de Intervenções Clínicas (N = 6), e Caracterização do Repertório de Habilidades Sociais (N = 10). Os estudos que compararam abordagens terapêuticas constataram a maior eficiência do treinamento em habilidades sociais (THS) para o desenvolvimento de repertório social mais competente, em comparação com a terapia cognitivo-comportamental. Os estudos de caracterização de perfis (10), relataram que os pacientes com fobia social apresentaram habilidades sociais mais deficitárias, apontando para o benefício potencial da participação em programas de THS. A análise crítica dos delineamentos apontou para a necessidade de novos estudos com amostras clínicas e não-clínicas, com alocação randômica dos participantes, com diagnóstico preciso e proposição de tarefas de interação contextualizadas, de modo a respaldar a generalização quanto à associação das habilidades sociais e fobia social, e evidenciar a funcionalidade e o processo pelo qual a ansiedade interfere no desempenho social.Palavras-chave: fobia social; ansiedade social; habilidades sociais. ABSTRACT Social phobia and social skills: a literature reviewThis study aimed to identify in the indexers Medline, PsycINFO, Lilacs and Scielo, in the period between 2000 and 2005, empirical studies that investigated social phobia in relation to social skills, followed by a critical analysis of the methodologies used by the studies listed. Sixteen papers were identified and grouped in two categories: Therapeutic Modalities -Application and Comparison of Clinical Interventions (N=6) and Characterization of the Social Skills Repertoire (N = 10). The studies that compared therapeutic approaches evidenced the higher efficiency of the Social Skills Training (SST), for the development of more competent social repertoire, compared to cognitive-behavioral therapy. The studies of profile characterization (10) reported that the patients with social phobia presented a social skills deficit, suggesting the potential benefit of participation in social skills training programs. The critical analysis of the researches design pointed to the need of new studies with clinical and non-clinical samples, with random allocation of participants, precise diagnosis, and proposition of contextualized interaction tasks, in order to support the generalization of findings related to the association between the social skills and social phobia, and to demonstrate the functionality and process by which anxiety interferes with social performance.

Previous research suggests that socially anxious individuals interpret ambiguous social information in a more threatening manner compared to non-anxious individuals. Recently, studies have experimentally modified interpretation and shown that this subsequently affected anxiety in non-anxious individuals. If similar procedures can modify interpretation biases in socially anxious individuals, they may lead to a reduction in social anxiety symptoms. In the current study, we examined the effect of a computerized Interpretation Modification Program (IMP) on interpretation bias and social anxiety symptoms. Twenty-seven socially anxious individuals were randomly assigned to the IMP or a control condition. Participants completed eight computer sessions over four weeks. The IMP modified interpretation by providing positive feedback when participants made benign interpretations and negative feedback in response to threat interpretations. The IMP successfully decreased threat interpretations, increased benign interpretations, and decreased social anxiety symptoms compared to the control condition. Moreover, changes in benign interpretation mediated IMP's effect on social anxiety. This initial trial suggests that interpretation modification may have clinical utility when applied as a multisession intervention.

In the development of CTSP, published studies now include (a) case studies (Bates & Clark, 1998;Edwards, Henwood, & Kannan, 2003;Edwards & Kannan, 2006;Wells & Papageorgiou, 1997); (b) experimental studies (e. g. Harvey, Clark, Ehlers, & Rapee, 2000;McManus et al, 2005;Stopa & Clark, 2000); (c) qualitative survey studies ; and (d) Clark et al's (2005) RCT, referred to above, in which the effect size for CTSP was considerably higher than that for exposure and applied relaxation. Edwards and Kannan's (2006) conclusion that the Vumile case provides evidence for the significance of cognitive change should be not be interpreted to mean that it demonstrates this with certainty.…”

This article is a response to commentaries by Davison (2005), S. Fishman (2006), Sanderson (2006), and Turk (2006) on Edwards and Kannan's (2006) case study, which documents the response to group therapy of Vumile, a South African student with social phobia. The case material is discussed in relation to five themes raised by the commentators: (a) the tension between structure and flexibility in manualization of treatments, (b) theoretical and practical aspects of the planning and implementation of the intervention, (c) the adaptation of an individual treatment to a group therapy format, (d) methodological aspects of data collection, and (e) methodological aspects related to the drawing of conclusions from the case material. Broader implications are drawn for the place of case-based methodology in the development of evidence-based practice in psychotherapy.
