Limited by traditional construction project management ideas and systems, the implementation of the PMC model in China still has serious problems such as opposition and frequent conflicts. How to reveal the causes of organizational conflicts and explore the key mechanism of the implementation of the PMC model from the system perspective are urgent problems to be solved. Based on the idea of engineering system view, this paper abstracts the PMC project participants with self-organizing characteristics of the organizational management system, in which the internal structure is closely related, and defines the connotation of synergy and synergistic evolution of the PMC project organizational management system. Using the Cucker–Smale model to describe the group movement, the hierarchical system and the acceleration efficiency function of the project legal person’s free will are constructed, and the structure, movement, and development law of the system itself are emphasized to simulate the ordered evolution trend of PMC project organizational management system and reveal the intrinsic causes of conflicts in PMC project and the key mechanisms of the PMC model application. The results show that first, the intensity of information communication between PMC subjects has a significant positive contribution to the orderliness of the organizational management system; second, too much acceleration of the project legal person’s free will causes group chaos in the system, while too little slows down the group stabilization time, which has a negative impact on cost and schedule; third, the more the organizational structure of PMC contractors tends to the whole-process integrated control, the more it can drive the group to gather in an orderly manner and form a synergistic control mode combining self-organization and other organizations; and fourth, the implementation of the PMC model should focus on eliminating the traditional institutional and conceptual barriers, forming a project management model with integrated control of the whole process of the PMC project contractor and effective macro supervision of the project legal person. The research results of this paper revealed the intrinsic causes of conflicts in PMC projects and the key mechanisms of PMC model application; it can help solve the confrontational situation of PMC project participants, promote the development of the PMC model, and give full play to the investment benefits.

Toward a Stakeholder Perspective on Safety Risk Factors of Metro Construction: A Social Network Analysis

The rapid development of the metro has greatly relieved the traffic pressure on the urban ground system, but the frequency of metro construction accidents is also increasing year by year. Due to the complex construction process of the metro, once an accident occurs, casualties and property damage are extremely serious. The safety risk factors triggered by different stakeholders were the primary cause of accidents during the metro construction phase. This paper builts a social analysis network of safety risk factors in metro construction from a stakeholder’s perspective. Based on 42 accident cases and related literature, 6 stakeholders and 25 safety risk factors were identified and the relationships between stakeholders and safety risk factors were also determined. Through the application of social network analysis, a social network of safety risk factors in metro construction was constructed, and quantitative analysis was carried out based on density, degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and cohesive subgroup. The results showed that the key safety risk factors in the construction phase of the metro were in action of the contractor’s construction site managers, lack of safety protection at the construction site, insufficient detailed survey and design information provided by the designer, unfavorable government regulation, and bad weather. Moreover, the results of 20 cohesive subgroups illustrated the interrelationship between safety risk factors. S1H2 (“violations by operatives” related to contractor) and S1H4 (“lack of safety precautions” related to contractor) and S5H5 (“ineffective supervision” related to supervisor) both belonged to subgroup G1, which means that there is a high probability that these three safety risk factors would occur simultaneously. This paper provided a basis to improve the level of safety risk management and control from the stakeholder’s perspective.

Towards Complexity and Dynamics: A Bibliometric-Qualitative Review of Network Research in Construction

Social network analysis (SNA) has gained increasing academic attention in the construction domain over the past two decades due to its capability to characterize the complexity and dynamics of interindividual and interorganizational interactions. To date, however, scant attempt has been made to develop an integrated framework to systematically review the diversified network research at different levels in this domain and to quantitatively characterize the evolution of related research interests and research instruments. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a bibliometric-qualitative review based on 106 papers published from 1997 to 2020. Keyword cooccurrence analysis is employed to reveal the research foci, identify the research trends, and develop a comprehensive categorization framework, which classifies related research based on two interrelated dimensions: the type of network node (individual and organization) and the levelof network analysis (project level, corporate level, and industry level). The framework then facilitates further content analysis in terms of research topics, research designs, and research instruments. The results provide evidence that the research foci in this domain are generally moving towards addressing the complexity and dynamics of project-related relations at more diversified levels, in terms of not only research topics but also research instruments. Future research can be enriched by investigating the multiple types of dynamic interproject relationships, adopting state-of-the-art methodologies for network data collection and triangulation, and employing multiple SNA constructs and inferential statistical methods to reveal how complex networks coevolve and interact with actors’ behaviors as well as project and organizational outcomes.
