Social network analysis of an emerging innovation: direct-to-garment printing technology

Abstract: PurposeThe study primarily aims to examine an emerging fashion technology, direct-to-garment (DTG) printing, using data mining-driven social network analysis (SNA). Simultaneously, the study also demonstrates application of a group novel computational technique to capture, analyze and visually depict data for strategic insight into the fashion industry.Design/methodology/approachA total of 5,060 tweets related to DTG were captured using Crimson Hexagon. Python and Gephi were applied to convert, calculate and v… Show more

“…Professionals in academia and industry have also been struggling to solve the "attitude-behavior" gap in sustainable fashion, a phenomenon whereby consumers who admit to having solid environmental or sustainable values do not transform these values into purchases of sustainable fashion products [67,68]. Data mining-driven SNA (Semantic Network Analysis) refers to the analysis of massive volumes of user-generated data that integrate computational intelligence and include but are not limited to big data analytics and machine learning [69,70]. Accordingly, we attempt to fill this gap by applying a semantic network analysis using text mining to explore the concept of sustainability in the apparel and textile industry.…”

“…Shi et al (2021) examined demand trends using artificial intelligence by detecting clothing attributes such as fabric textures, design, etc. These data mining research methods are likely to provide more fruitful and timely results if they can be focused directly on consumers themselves by accessing their participation in social media (Yu et al , 2021).…”
