Social innovation research checklist: A crowdsourcing open call and digital hackathon to develop a checklist for research to advance social innovation in health

Abstract: While social innovations in health have shown promise in closing the healthcare delivery gap, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), more research is needed to evaluate, scale up, and sustain social innovations. Research checklists can standardize and improve reporting of research findings, promote transparency, and increase replicability of study results and findings. This article describes the development of a 17-item social innovation in health research checklist to assess and report social… Show more

“…Our data demonstrate that designathons can be implemented with COVID-19 precaution measures in place. This is consistent with other hackathons that were successfully implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic [ 36 , 37 ]. In contrast to our designathon, these events were conducted virtually [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…We conducted a pilot, quasi-experimental cohort study from September 2019 to March 2020 to evaluate five different models of service delivery across seven sites as part of the Innovative Tools to Expand Youth-friendly HIV Self-Testing (I-TEST) study, known locally as 4 Youth by Youth (4YBY). We followed the template for Social Innovation in Health Research Checklist 23 to provide a detailed description of the interventions and ultimately replicability ( Supplementary Table S1 ). The trial was registered with (NCT04070287).…”

“…A Social Innovation in Health Monitoring and Evaluation Framework 10 and a Social Innovation in Health Research Checklist can help to increase rigour of social innovation research. 11 More research is needed to examine the process and outcomes of social innovation in health during health emergencies. The United Nations General Assembly Resolution 71/276 12 describes resilience as the ability of a system, community or society exposed to hazards to resist, absorb, accommodate to and recover from the effects of a hazard in a timely and efficient manner, including through the preservation and restoration of its essential basic structures and functions.…”
