Social Ecology of Asthma

Abstract: This article describes a process for integrating health behavior and social science theories with practice-based insights using participatory systems thinking and diagramming methods largely inspired by system dynamics methods. This integration can help close the gap between research and practice in health education and health behavior by offering a systematic approach to bring together stakeholders across multiple domains. In this process we create a diagram using constructs from multiple health behavior theo… Show more

“…44 System dynamics modelling is a method that describes dynamic, multilevel, linear and non-linear processes required so that solutions to challenging social problems like gun violence can be identified. [45][46][47][48][49][50][51] We will assemble a multisector group to engage in a series of these group model building sessions to create a causal loop diagram. A causal loop diagram is a visualisation of how different variables in a system are inter-related.…”

“…The above discussion highlights the importance of considering the socioecological model of asthma prevention and management, which has been embraced by public health agencies (such as the CDC), as a framework for guiding interventions for chronic disease prevention and management 63,64. According to the socioecological model, people exist within a system of relationships, within complex layers of environments that impact on their lives.…”

“…Participatory system dynamics (SD) modeling brings stakeholders together to examine complex problems at the community level [18,19]. The approach has been used to examine various public health concerns [20][21][22][23][24], including HIV/AIDS [25][26][27]. Participatory SD modeling engages stakeholders in an iterative "systems thinking" process that contributes to model building by diagraming, critiquing, seeking data to quantify and calibrate, and simulating interactive systems-level dynamics with the aid of computer tools [28][29][30].…”
