Social dominance and sexual orientation

Abstract: Abstract. Heterosexual males are reported to display higher levels of physical aggression and lower levels of empathy than homosexual males. A characteristic linked to both aggression and empathy is social dominance orientation (SDO). A significant sex difference has been reported for SDO, with heterosexual males scoring higher than heterosexual females. The precise relationship between dominance and aggression is currently contested. Given the association between SDO, aggression and empathy, and the differenc… Show more

“…Alcohol consumption and participation in public leisure spaces have been understood as a symbol of the construction of the hegemonic masculinity (Bird, 1996; Capraro, 2000; Dempster, 2011). Hegemonic masculinity is occasionally associated with committing violent acts and other types of risk behaviors with which manhood or masculinity is put to the test in peer groups (De Visser & Smith, 2007; Dickens & Sergeant, 2008; Peralta et al, 2010; Sergeant et al, 2006). Despite the evident connection between alcohol consumption and the reinforcement of masculinity, there are few studies that have applied a gender perspective or gaze to analyzing this phenomenon, something which is essential if we are to investigate the differential consumption of drugs and associated behavior with accuracy (Courtenay, 2000).…”

“…Empathic concern, the ability to sense feelings from (unfortunate) others, which in turn generates sympathy, compassion, and selfless concern for them, is also higher in homosexual than heterosexual men (Davis, 1983;Chee, Mohd Noor & Ahmad, 2013). Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), which measures group-based social inequality and anti-egalitarianism, is lower in homosexual men than heterosexual men (Sidanius, Levin, Liu & Pratto, 2000;Dickins & Sergeant, 2008), and lower even than in heterosexual women (Dickins & Sergeant, 2008).…”

“…Due to the social function of sexual behavior (e.g., reinforcing social bonds, appeasement, pacification, stress reduction), some degree of same-sex sexual attraction, as a motivator for same-sex sexual behavior, would have been a selective advantage, strengthening within-sex social bonds and reducing intragroup conflict (Barron & Hare, 2020 ). In fact, gay men have been shown to describe themselves as less aggressive than heterosexual men (Dickins & Sergeant, 2008 ; Ellis et al, 1990 ; Gladue & Bailey, 1995 ; Sergeant et al, 2006 ), more empathetic, and more agreeable than heterosexual men (Lippa, 2005 , 2008 ; Salais & Fischer, 1995 ; Sergeant et al, 2006 ). They also show stronger neural activation during empathizing (Perry et al, 2013 ).…”
