Social Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Social determinants of health (SDoH), which encompass the economic, social, environmental, and psychosocial factors that influence health, play a significant role in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors as well as CVD morbidity and mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic and the current social justice movement sparked by the death of George Floyd have laid bare long-existing health inequities in our society driven by SDoH. Despite a recent focus on these structural drivers of health disparitie… Show more

“…While there are significant associations between SVI and both non-endometrioid EC and survival, the biological mechanism is still unknown. High social vulnerability may be associated with biological stress responses, as the cancer literature has previously used SVI to assess the community’s resiliency and vulnerability from external stressors [ 30 , 31 , 49 , 50 , 51 ]. Future studies could better define why Black women and women residing in areas of high SVI are more frequently diagnosed with non-endometrioid EC.…”

“…Noteworthy, social determinants of health, constituted by social, psychosocial and economic factors influencing health, exert a relevant role in the pathogenesis of CVD risk and morbi‐mortality. Several of the underlying physiological mechanisms linking development of CVD to social determinants of health have been analysed, and encompass inflammation, elevated stress hormones, immune cell activation, and cellular aging 40–42 …”

“…Several of the underlying physiological mechanisms linking development of CVD to social determinants of health have been analysed, and encompass inflammation, elevated stress hormones, immune cell activation, and cellular aging. [40][41][42] Transformation is part of the clinical profession, and it is the clinicians' responsibility to look for better ways to care for patients. Although transforming care delivery can feel intimidating, to be successful clinicians need the skills to develop trusting relationships with patients at the same time as sharing evidence-based knowledge with colleagues.…”

“…Many LS7 health behaviors and clinical factors are impacted by social determinants of health (SDoH). SDoH are the economic, social, environmental, and psychosocial conditions in which individuals are born, grow, live, work, and age [ 5 , 6 ]. These conditions are shaped by the distribution of resources and power at local and national levels [ 5 ].…”
