Social Class and (Un)Ethical Behavior: Evidence from a Large Population Sample

Abstract: Abstract:We test whether and how membership in the upper class affects ethical behavior in a large representative population sample. Using objective measures of socioeconomic status to define class, we find no evidence of a general tendency for upper class to be less ethical, although we do replicate previous findings that higher status leads to less condemnation of infidelity. We also find evidence that higher class status leads to more self-focus and disengagement, as previously shown in laboratory studies w… Show more

“…Among the traditional indicators of SES-income, occupation, and education-HEQ also shows the strongest relationship with a range of outcomes, including lifestyle variables, beliefs, and functioning (Attewell & Newman, 2010;Reardon, 2011;Trautmann et al, 2013). It is also easily and often measured in large social surveys.…”

“…Most nations therefore strive to improve the education level of their population. For individuals, education is a strong indicator of social class (Fiske & Markus, 2012;Lareau & Conley, 2008;Singh-Manoux et al, 2007;Trautmann, van de Kuilen, & Zeckhauser, 2013), and higher levels of education are positively associated with a range of valued outcomes, such as political interest and engagement (Emler & Frazer, 1999); trust (Borgonovi, 2012); happiness (Chen, 2011;Cuñado & Gracia, 2011); and health (Marmot, Ryff, & Bumpass, 1997).…”

“…An obvious problem with studying such behavior in a regular experimental laboratory with students is the degree to which students, who are rich only in relative and not absolute terms and who have limited experience with giving, represent real wealthy individuals (2). One major contribution of our study is that, to our knowledge, we are the first to investigate social preferences in a controlled incentivized experiment with a sample of objectively wealthy people.…”
