Social Capital, Resilience and Accessibility in Urban Systems: a Study on Sweden

Abstract: Spatial systems appear to exhibit often a complex pattern of socio-economic development, in terms of (un)employment, income, mobility, ethnic composition, and urbanisation rates. Their evolution is co-determined by such factors as: market proximity, labour and housing market developments, public amenities, use of and access to transport systems, socio-economic composition of the population, etc. In addition, a sine qua non for sustaining urban economic growth is the local or regional presence of individual and… Show more

“…The social capital of the board of directors can obtain resources for the enterprise, can access to high-quality information technology, and is the key for the enterprise to establish relations with the outside world. The richer the social capital of the board of directors, the better it is for the enterprise to obtain reliable information resources and promote mutual learning among enterprises, thus increasing the richness of the enterprise's knowledge, enriching the enterprise's innovation elements, and thus improving the enterprise's innovation performance [ 3 ].…”

“…Subsequent ecological studies of resilience grew significantly (Neubert & Caswell, 1997 ; Reggiani et al, 2002 ) and one of the modern definitions of resilience states that it refers to “the ability of an entity or system to “recover form and position following a disturbance or disruption of some kind” (Martin, 2012 : p. 4). Some of the most prominent approaches to economic resilience can be found in Nijkamp ( 1999 ), Reggiani et al ( 2002 ), Bristow and Healy ( 2020 ) and Östh et al ( 2018 ), which maintain concerns predominantly with the economic rather than the socioeconomic aspects of resilience. The use of resilience as a concept that connects the economy with aggregate mental health has not been attempted thus far even though the link is evidently clear.…”

“…Adger 2000 ; Borsekova et al 2018 ; Chelleri et al 2012 , 2015 ; Martin 2012 ; Modica and Reggiani 2015 ; Plodinec 2009 ; Reggiani et al 2002 ; Rose and Liao 2005 ; Simmie and Martin 2010 ). Resilience can be seen as a general framework for depicting and analysing the dynamics of complex socioeconomic systems, in particular from the perspective of the recovery of such systems after the occurrence of a shock or perturbation (Östh et al 2018 ).…”

“…Recent studies in complexity science emphasize the need for systematic research into socioeconomic systems, given the socio-spatial interactivity among actors and complex socio-economic phenomena in space and time, and their resilience to disruptive events (Griffith and Chun 2015 ; Marincioni et al 2013 ; Liu et al 2007 ; Östh et al 2018 ). Considering that competitiveness can be measured through two parameters, namely performance and time, it is in principle possible to establish a formal relationship between resilience and competitiveness (Cavaco and Cruz-Machado 2014 ).…”
