Social capital and knowledge sharing in academic research teams

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyse the role of social capital within academic research teams and its influence on knowledge sharing. An empirical study was carried out with 87 academic research teams at a Spanish university. The results show that internal ties have a positive effect on trust. Moreover, the results also reflect that both dimensions of social capital (internal ties and trust) have a positive and significant effect on research teams' knowledge sharing. “…Knowledge sharing is a bi-directional process, in which group or team members exchange, modify, and re-use ideas and information, based on mutual trust (Chen & Hung, 2010;Garcia-Sánchez, Diaz-Diaz, & De Saá-Pérez, 2017). “…Unlike lecture-centred approaches that focus on instruction, in LCs, the focus is on social interactions, collaboration, and knowledge sharing (Majid & Wey, 2009). As previously mentioned, according to Tinto (2000), knowledge sharing is a central facet of LCs: When students mutually exchange study-related information, ideas, and expertise (Garcia-Sánchez et al, 2017), it can contribute to the competence of individual students or the learning community as a whole.…”

“…In today's research environment, collaboration and knowledge sharing are a necessity (Garcia‐Sánchez, Diaz‐Diaz, & De Saá‐Pérez, ). Although several institutions invest huge sums of money into the acquisition of software, databases and networking infrastructure, the attainment of effective knowledge sharing continues to be a challenge, especially tacit knowledge.…”
