BackgroundConsumption of caffeinated energy drinks (CED) has escalated during the last few years, especially among schoolchildren, with evident adverse health sequelae in this critical age group.ObjectiveThis study examined the prevalence of CED consumption and its associations with sleep, physical and mental health, and dietary and lifestyle habits among schoolchildren in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).MethodA structured self-administered online questionnaire was developed and disseminated among schoolchildren aged 14–18 years, selected from schools of the seven emirates of the UAE.ResultsMore than 4,500 (N= 4,648) responses received. A relatively low prevalence of CED consumption (20%) was found among schoolchildren in the UAE. However, those who reported CED consumption were more likely to report unhealthy dietary (skipping breakfast, frequent snacking, and eating fast foods, low fruit, and vegetable intake) and lifestyle behaviors (long screen time, poor sleep health), in addition to poor self-reported mental and physical health than non-users. CED consumption was significantly and variably associated with multiple sociodemographic factors such as students’ nationality, parental companionship, sex, school type, education level (children’s and parents’), daily allowance, academic performance, screen time, sleep quality parameters, self-reported physical and mental health, and parents’ employment. Sources of knowledge about CED were social media (55%), friends/schoolmates (52%), and family members (52%). Students believed that CED constitute sugar (87%), caffeine (69%), artificial flavors (67%) sweeteners (54%), and stimulating components (43%). The majority (70%) of students reported that CED consumption increases the risks for heart disease, diabetes, high blood sugar (65%), addiction (64%), high blood pressure (59%), and obesity (57%).ConclusionThese results offer important insights for health professionals, child health specialists, policymakers, and parents in the UAE regarding adolescents’ attitudes, knowledge and behaviors toward CED consumption.

The main objective of this study was to examine the status of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, Good Health and Well-Being, in Asian Arab countries and to explore some challenges through critical observations. Utilising the Meta-Analysis method and the Search, Appraisal, Synthesis and Analysis framework, the UNDP’s ‘Arab Region SDG Index and Dashboard Report 2022’, and relevant secondary sources were analysed. Calculations were based on the value, rate and trend of the targets of SDG3. Results showed that (i) the average SDG Index Score (0–100) for the Asian 12 Arab countries was 60.06; (ii) seven countries’ targets showed significant challenges remaining and four countries faced major challenges; (iii) 11 countries were experiencing modern improvements; (iv) nine countries had better achievements on nine targets and lower achievements on the remaining seven targets, with some exceptions; and (v) the challenges encountered were regional-level policy gaps, state-level health structural problems, socio-economic and demographic settings, and community/individual-level unawareness about health and well-being. The analysis would be useful to the governments of the Arab Asian countries, development practitioners, health experts and policymakers.

Social harmony and community wellbeing are two important concepts that are closely intertwined. Social harmony refers to the peaceful coexistence of individuals and groups within a society, while community wellbeing refers to the overall health and prosperity of a community. When social harmony is present, people are able to live and work together in a way that is respectful and cooperative, and this can contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community. Both terms are important in social work, particularly in community social work practice. Both are important agendas in many of the international and Asian social work policies. The combination of these two concepts has direct links with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the Goals 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11.The concept of social harmony is rarely addressed in community-based social work and social development fields in academic research though this is one of the core aspects. Social harmony means all sorts of social ties, networking and relationships that help to bring all efforts into the community. Social harmony is considered an essential element for collective actions and social peace that helps to strengthen community efforts. This is a powerful tool for a community-based and institutional policy agenda, such as reducing poverty and social inequality, utilization of local resources, and so on. On the other hand, community wellbeing has been widely addressed in academic research and policy implications in social sciences as well as social work. Community wellbeing content has been evidenced in many studies and policy agendas on social inequality, health inequality, regional disparity, international labour migration, disasters and climate change, and so on.One way that social harmony can be promoted is through education and awareness campaigns that teach people about the importance of diversity and inclusion. These campaigns can help people to understand and appreciate the different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of others, which can lead to more tolerance and understanding within a community. Another way to promote social harmony is through the establishment of community organizations and programs that bring people together for a common goal. For example, community centers, sports teams, and volunteering organizations can all provide opportunities for people to interact with one another in a positive and productive way. This can help to build relationships and foster a sense of community pride and belonging, which can in turn contribute to social harmony. In addition to promoting social harmony, it is also important to focus on improving community wellbeing. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, such as providing access to quality healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. When people have access to these resources, they are more likely to be healthy, educated, and financially stable, which can lead to a higher quality of life for the entire community.
