Abstract: Paul frequently refers to the traditions of his ancestors as 'the scriptures', or with introductory formula such as 'it is written'. Such references have often been taken as self-explanatory in that it was assumed that these were references to the writings which in Jewish and Christian tradition have acquired the status of canonicity.
