Snorre TLP Configuration and Analysis Technology

Abstract: This paper gives a summary of the structural design of the Snorre Tension Leg Platform (TLP) and presents the final platform configuration. The most important parameters and requirements governing TLP configuration are presented. Key aspects of the sizing process and final geometry are summarized and finally an outline of the analysis methodology is provided. The selection of a TLP configuration is an interative process rather than the result of one particular exercise.

“…The 1:125 scaled model based on the SNORRE-A tension leg platform (Almeland et al, 1991) has been tested, with the platform deck modelled as a box-shaped structure. The main particulars of the platform at full scale and model scale are given in Table 1 and Figure 1.…”

“…The TLP model was divided into two parts namely a hull module (columns and pontoons) and a topside deck module. The TLP hull module was represented by four circular columns and four square pontoons; the scaled model dimensions were based on the SNORRE-A TLP (Almeland et al, 1991). The main principles of the structure are given in Table 1.…”

“…The box dimensions were selected to represent, at a scale of 1:125, the 76 3 76 m centre-to-centre spacing between columns of the SNORRE-A TLP installed in 1992 at a water depth of 310 m in the Norwegian North Sea. 24 The model deck was fabricated using a 10-mm-thick aluminium plate for the bottom and 100 3 25 3 2.5 mm rectangular hollow sections (RHS) aluminium extrusions for the sides. The thickness of the model deck plate was selected using a finite element simulation to minimise the out-of-plane deformations so that the elastic effects could be neglected.…”
