Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) are one of the most interesting high-energy completions of the Standard Model, because they provide a rich, powerful and elegant group-theoretical framework able to resolve a variety of problems remaining in our current understanding of particle physics. They usually act as motivators for many low energy BSM theories, such as left-right symmetric or supersymmetric models, and they serve to fill the gap between the experimentally reachable low energies and the physics in the ultraviolet. In recent years, however, they have fallen slightly from the spotlight, in favour of "simplified" models with more specific phenomenological predictions. The aim of this review is to summarize the state of the art on GUTs and argue for their importance in modern physics. Recent advances in experiments permit to test the predictions of GUTs at different energy scales. First, as GUTs can play a role in the inflationary dynamics of the early Universe, their imprints could be found in the CMB observations by the Planck satellite. Remarkably enough, GUTs could manifest themselves also in terrestrial tests; several planned experiments aim to probe the proton stability and to establish order of magnitude higher bounds on its lifetime. Moreover, the predictions of specific GUT models could be tested even at the LHC thanks to its high energy reach, via searches for exotic states or additional contributions to flavour anomalies.

We develop a model of sneutrino inflation that is charged under U(1)B−L gauge symmetry, in no-scale supergravity framework. The model provides an interesting modification of tribrid inflation. We impose U(1)R symmetry on the renormalizable level while allow Planck suppressed non-renormalizable operators that break R-symmetry. This plays a crucial role in realizing a Starobinsly-like inflation scenario from one hand. On the other hand it plays an essential role, as well as SUSY breaking effects, in deriving the tiny neutrino masses via TeV inverse seesaw mechanism. Thus, we provide an interpretation for the extremely small value of the μS mass parameter required for inverse seesaw mechanism. We discuss a reheating scenario and possible constraints on the model parameter space in connection to neutrino masses.

We perform a detailed study of the grand unified theories SO (10) and E(6) with left-right intermediate gauge symmetries of the form SU (N ) L ⊗ SU (N ) R ⊗ G. Proton decay lifetime constrains the unification scale to be 10 16 GeV and, as discussed in this paper, unwanted cosmological relics can be evaded if the intermediate symmetry scale is 10 12 GeV. With these conditions, we study the renormalisation group evolution of the gauge couplings and do a comparative analysis of all possible left-right models where unification can occur. Both the D-parity conserved and broken scenarios as well as the supersymmetric (SUSY) and Non-supersymmetric (Non-SUSY) versions are considered. In addition to the fermion and scalar representations at each stage of the symmetry breaking, contributing to the β-functions, we list the intermediate left-right groups which successfully meet these requirements. We make use of the dimension-5 kinetic mixing effective operators for achieving unification and large intermediate scale. A significant result in the supersymmetric case is that to achieve successful unification for some breaking patterns, the scale of SUSY breaking needs to be at least a few TeV. In some of these cases, intermediate scale can be as low as ∼ 10 12GeV, for SUSY scale to be ∼ 30 TeV. This has important consequences in the collider searches for SUSY particles and phenomenology of the lightest neutralino as dark matter. *
