“…To this end, we followed eGFP expression in both skin and small intestine from eGFP-TRF1 þ /KI mice. In the case of telogen tail-skin hair follicles, we found maximum eGFP fluorescence at the known stem cell compartments of the epidermis (EP), sebaceous gland (SG) and the middle hair follicle bulge [18][19][20][21][22][23] , while eGFP fluorescence was lowest at the interfollicular EP (Fig. 2a-c).…”

“…This approach permits a more comprehensive clonal readout of cells, including rare stem cells, as opposed to using tissue-specific or stem cell-specific reporters such as SRY(sex determining region Y)-box gene 9, Cytokeratin 15, or leucine-rich G proteincoupled receptor 5 for hair follicle stem cells (21). Thus, labeling is independent of a change in marker gene expression that could occur after denervation.…”

“…This process requires distinct populations of HFSCs that reside within the bulge (13)(14)(15)(16). ARTS was the only Sept4 isoform detected in HFSCs ( fig.…”
