Drawing on 17 qualitative interviews with women aged 18–22, this paper explores how sexting practices are related to views on and uses of pornography. While pornography was found to be an important reference point for participants in their sexting, sexted images were actively tailored to differentiate themselves from porn in three ways. First, private images were to be less explicit and more realistic in terms of content. Second, unlike pornography, which was seen as one-sided, sex- ting relied on reciprocity and intimacy. Third, participants were careful to explicitly state what they were consenting to when sexting and, although a few were turned on by coercive fantasies found in porn, they clearly demarcated such experiences from those they wanted in their sexting relationships. This paper examines women’s active engagement with pornography to extend our understanding of the relationship between sexting and mundane media use, specifically in this case pornography.

How do young people interpret and negotiate their sense of being affected in the context of social media use? Our study draws on recent theorizing that views affective practices as discursive, relational, and imbued with power. We specifically address practices that users engage in as they pursue forms of digitally mediated emotional involvement when using Snapchat, an image-based social media application. Our data consist of focus group dialogues with Norwegian students aged 16-19, recruited from schools selected for socioeconomic and multicultural diversity. Excerpts exemplify how Snapchat use is not only engagingly talked about, but also affects non-digital everyday interactions. The analysis illustrates how young people's talk about Snapchat deploys various discursive objects that convey promises of happiness and well-being, and affords particular forms of subjectivity. Image-sharing practices, and how they are communicated and felt, are embedded in and reproduce social norms, yet also provide spaces of belonging.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación centrada en conocer el grado de desarrollo de la competencia digital de niñas y niños de 11 y 12 años de la Comunidad Autónoma de Galicia. El foco se pone en el desarrollo de la identidad digital y la gestión de la privacidad, cuestiones de seguridad digital en el marco de referencia DigComp. Se presenta un estudio mixto que combina seis estudios de casos y la administración de una prueba de evaluación de la competencia digital (ECODIES) en la que participan, atendiendo a las variables de género y dimensión seguridad, 486 escolares. Los resultados apuntan a una discordancia entre las buenas actitudes y alta concienciación en el uso seguro de la tecnología, especialmente por parte de las niñas, y las prácticas reales en la red, mediadas por los discursos de alarma social que afectan a las formas de participación de uno y otro género, This article presents the results of an investigation focused on knowing the degree of development of the digital competence of girls and boys aged 11 and 12 in the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain). The focus is on the development of digital identity and privacy management, digital security issues in the DigComp framework. We present a mixed study that combines six case studies and the administration of a digital competence assessment test (ECODIES) that included participation, according to the gender and security dimension variables, of 486 schoolchildren. The results reveal a disagreement between good attitudes and high awareness in the safe use of technology, especially by girls, and real practices on the web, mediated by social alarm discourses that affect the forms of participation of both genders.
