Snap Ii Power Conversion System Topical Report No. 8, Mercury Condesing Research Studies

Abstract: SNAP li Is the designation for a j KW nuclear guxillary power unit to be used In a satellite vehicle. The SNAP II system consists of a reactor heat source, a mercury Ranklne engine, and an alternator. The condenser, a component of the mercury Ranklne engine, returns the mercury vapor from the turbine exhaust to the liquid state, subcools the liquid, and supplies this liquid to the condensate pump.

“…The Baroczy (1965) void fraction correlation was developed using isothermal, two-phase, two-component liquid fraction data from the literature: liquid mercury-nitrogen data from Kiraly and Koestel (1960), and water-air data from Hewitt et al (1961;1962). The author recommended that this correlation could be used for all fluids, including liquid metals.…”
