Snakuscules

Abstract: Abstract-A snakuscule (a minuscule snake) is the simplest active contour that we were able to design while keeping the quintessence of traditional snakes: an energy term governed by the data, and a regularization term. Our construction is an area-based snake, as opposed to curve-based snakes. It is parameterized by just two points, thus further easing requirements on the optimizer. Despite their ultimate simplicity, snakuscules retain enough versatility to be employed for solving various problems such as cell … Show more

“…Additional information about the shape of the prostate can increase robustness to noise and reduce segmentation time. Deformable models have been widely used for medical image segmentation [5,6,7,8,9] and are generally more successful than the former methods. Fitting ellipses, ellipsoids, super-ellipses, and deformable ellipses or using them for initialization have been relatively attractive approaches for prostate segmentation due to the shape of the gland [10,11,12,13,14].…”

“…The deformable template consists of a pair of nested contours and allowed to move in the template's RAT space. Thévenaz and Unser [18,19] employed a shapespecific parametrization and regularization to maintain shape specificity. In [20], we provided a unified approach for segmentation of circular and elliptical shaped objects.…”

“…On the energy front, many techniques rely on region-and gradient-based energies or functions derived thereof [17]. Recently, Thévenaz and Unser [18,19] proposed a new contrast-based energy for optimizing concentric circles and ellipses. The contrast is defined between the pixel intensities inside the inner contour and those lying in the annular region between the inner and outer contours.…”

“…I N a previous paper, we introduced what would possibly be the simplest snake that retains practical usefulness [1]. It was parameterized by just two points, and its purpose was to latch on circular bright image patches.…”
