Sn9 4– Zintl Ions as Reactive Precursor for Neat Solids: Syntheses and Crystal Structures of Rb4[SnTe4], KxCs4–x[SnTe4], and KxCs10–x[Sn4Te12]

Abstract: Dedicated to Professor Hubert Schmidbaur on the occasion of his 75 th birthdayThe reactions of Zintl ions Sn 9 4− formed in ethylenediamine solutions of K 2 Cs 2 Sn 9 and Rb 4 Sn 9 with elemental tellurium have been investigated. Addition of elemental tellurium to the filtrates of these solutions leads -depending on the reaction conditions -to four different products: Compounds K 0.36 (1 [Sn 4 Te 12 ] (4). Compounds 1, 2 and 4 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

“…The distances between the Sn–S bonds are comparable to those found in Ba 2 SnS 4 and Ba 3 Sn 2 S 7 . Furthermore, the bond distance of Sn2–Q1 is 2.544 Å, which is slightly shorter than the typical average Sn–Te distance of 2.735 Å in the compound Rb 4 SnTe 4 . However, it is longer than the average Sn–S distance in Ba 2 SnS 4 .…”
