Smoothing B-spline active contour for fast and robust image and video segmentation

Abstract: This paper deals with fast image and video segmentation using active contours. Region based active contours using level-sets are powerful techniques for video segmentation but they suffer from large computational cost. A parametric active contour method based on B-Spline interpolation has been proposed in [1] to highly reduce the computational cost but this method is sensitive to noise. Here, we choose to relax the rigid interpolation constraint in order to robustify our method in the presence of noise: by usi… Show more

“…Since the vector fields used are assumed to contain only one object, changes of topology were not an issue. Therefore, we chose an explicit representation based on evolving spline curves [31,6,19,25]. For translation, the segmentation algorithm can be described synthetically as follows 1.…”

“…Furthermore, this first step provides an efficient estimation of the 8 parameters of the bilinear camera motion model. As a second step, the previous motion segmentation is used to initialize a region-based motion segmentation algorithm based on smoothing spline active contours [11]. Smoothing splines offer a robust active contour implementation to overcome the problem of noisy data that working with MPEG streams implies.…”
