Smoking, occupation, history of selected diseases and bladder cancer risk in Manisa, Turkey

Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify and quantify the reasons for the high bladder cancer rates in Turkey. We conducted a case-control study in Manisa, Turkey, in 2011. The study included 173 patients with incident, histologically confirmed bladder cancer and 282 controls who were frequency matched by age, sex and geographic area, admitted to the main hospital of Manisa for a wide range of acute diseases. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from multiple… Show more

“…The incidence of BC in men is higher in the northwestern part of West Asia (Turkey and Lebanon) than in other parts, and cigarette smoking is proposed as the most important risk factor for BC in these countries [63, 64]. Among the current smokers with UBC in our study, the variant alleles of GSTM1 null, TP53 rs1042522Arg, and MTRR rs1801394G were more frequent than the wild-type alleles.…”

“…Occupational exposure (e.g., to diesel) has also been suggested as a risk factor for BC [64]. However, any effect of occupational history in our study was clearly passive, as these UBC patients were working in business affairs (92.3%) or as house wives (7.7%).…”

“…Furthermore, we selected all male participants and matched the gout patients and nongout controls to the same age and diagnosis date to avoid confounding results. However, there were many risk factors associated with bladder cancer that were not avoided in the current study such as smoking, education, or intake of vitamin C (Erdurak et al, 2014;Ryu et al, 2014), as the outpatient data did not provide sufficient information on these behaviors. This study evaluated the effect of allopurinol or benzbromarone use on the development of incident cancers.…”

“…[7][8][9]31 In the Dutch study by Vermeulen et al, 7 only 15 of the included 1,767 bladder cancer cases had SCC. In contrast, previous smaller case-control studies have focused only on urothelial carcinomas 11 or on bladder cancer overall.…”
