This comprehensive review includes large-scale pan-India surveys and regional studies. Every aspect of smokeless tobacco, including variations in social, economic, demographic, gender, and education stratifiers, is presented. This evidence-based presentation thereby provides insight not only to assess the burden but can serve as a base, leading to the development and encouragement of research in closing the existing gaps in knowledge. It can also provide a track to formulate tobacco control strategies as well as to reinforce and potentially guide tobacco control policy aimed at addressing the tailored needs in the Indian context. The recommendations expand the tobacco control spectrum and are the first of their kind in the literature to focus on cessation programs as a paramedical subject to draw the attention of not only policymakers but also to integrate medical and dental educational institutions, health care professionals, and tobacco users to synergistically develop successful tobacco control measures.

More than two-thirds of death in developing countries are due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and tobacco is a leading risk factor. Among different socio-demographic factors, occupation and its corelates have impact on use of smokeless tobacco (SLT) and the evidence in India is limited. The objectives of this study are to find out the overall preva-lence of SLT use and its pattern of association with various occupation and associated variables. Methods: This study used data from Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) wave 1. Current and ever users of SLT are taken into consideration as target population. For the data analysis, survey-weighted tools have been applied for descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic re-gression model. The weighted data analysis has been done using R. Results and Discussion: From the sample size of 65561, 38% have ever used either smoking or SLT, of them, 40 % use to-bacco in smoke form, 51 % use SLT and 9 % take both. At the population level, 22.8% and 20.4% are ever and current users of SLT respectively. Type, place, and workload in the occupation found to be significantly associated with SLT use. Workplace tobacco-cessation-policy for infor-mal-workers is required to manage this issue.

This study examined gender differences in patterns of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among various socioeconomic and demographic segments in Bangladesh and India, which are home to 80 percent of global SLT users and share similar sociocultural milieus. The objective was to provide evidence of whether gender-focused interventions and policies might be helpful for SLT cessation programs. Data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey were used for the analysis. In Bangladesh, data were collected between July and August 2009, and 9,629 individuals were successfully interviewed. In India, data were collected from June 2009 to January 2010, and 69,296 individuals were interviewed. Tests of proportions revealed that the prevalence of SLT use was highest among women in Bangladesh (27.9 percent) and among men (32.9 percent) in India. Logistic regression models revealed that the odds of SLT use was lower among Bangladeshi females in the highest age category. However, in India, a similar observation was made only for females with rural residences. In addition, the odds of SLT use was less among those with a higher level of education and wealth, irrespective of the sex or country. The present findings suggest a need for gender-specific policies and interventions for SLT control.
