Smithsonite flotation using potassium amyl xanthate and hexylmercaptan

Abstract: The influence of potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) and hexylmercaptan (HM) adsorption on smithsonite surface at various concentrations were investigated through using zeta potential, contact angle, microflotation and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies at different pH. The zeta potential measurements of KAX showed that the adsorption of ionic charge (more negative charge after KAX treatment) takes place on the surface of pure crystalline smithsonite. The charges vary between 238 and 245 mV at pH 10 . 5. Flotation res… Show more

“…According to these findings, the flotation of zinc oxide using amines and P80 was carried out at temperatures as low as 8 °C, and this flotation temperature was much lower than those previously reported (Keqing et al, 2005;Hosseini and Forssberg, 2006;Ejtemaei et al, 2010;Majid et al, 2014).…”

“…The optimum microflotation recovery amounts to 78% with a contact angle of 92u at an HM concentration of 1?1610 22 M. Figure 3 shows the spectra of oxide zinc mineral in different HM concentrations at pH 9. 12 Clearly in all obtained spectra, the S-H stretching bands (2530 cm 21 ) are missing. However, the band due to the S-H stretching vibration can be weak and even may be missing in dilute solution.…”

“…However, industrial practice has shown that most xanthates are not fit for recovering zinc oxide minerals despite their sulfidization. The short carbon chain length of most commercially used xanthates (carbon atomic numbers of 2–5) may account for their poor collectivity [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
