Tratamento Ortodôntico. Sorriso. Estética. RESUMO Introdução: Avaliar a influência da posição vertical dos dentes anteriores inferiores na percepção estética do sorriso de leigos afrodescendentes de diferentes faixas etárias. Materiais e Métodos: Um sorriso padrão foi construído a partir de fotografias intraorais de um indivíduo afro-descendente. A posição vertical dos dentes anteriores inferiores foi gradualmente alterada, movendo os dentes para cima e para baixo dentro da moldura do lábio em incrementos de 0,5 mm variando de-1,5 mm a 2,0 mm, em relação ao ponto zero. Utilizando uma escala analógica visual, 150 indivíduos leigos afrodescendentes brasileiros de três diferentes faixas etárias (15-19, 35-44 e 65-74) classificaram a atratividade em relação a 8 sorrisos com exposição gengival alterada. Resultados: Não houve diferenças significativas (p> 0,05) entre os avaliadores masculino e feminino para os três grupos. Todos os grupos etários atribuíram pontuações mais altas para os sorrisos com cobertura de 0,5 mm do lábio inferior nos incisivos centrais inferiores. No entanto, para os sorrisos menos atraentes, houve diferenças nas opiniões dos grupos etários (p <0,05). Conclusão: os grupos etários compartilhavam preferências semelhantes quanto ao sorriso mais agradável em relação às posições verticais dos dentes anteriores inferiores.

Recently, there has been greater interest in adopting a more holistic approach to healthcare. However, this trend should not limit itself merely to the notion that a human being lies behind the mouth being treated. Rather, it should embrace the understanding that this human can actively participate in and contribute to the treatment process. Patient Report Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient Report Experience Measures (PREMs) provide means for measuring data from the patient's perspective, and enable health-related feelings and functions to be evaluated. Accordingly, this critical review aims to provide definitions, rationales and applications of patient-centered approaches in dental clinical research. Some patient-centered constructs are especially relevant to dental clinical trials, such as oral healthrelated quality of life, pain/discomfort, aesthetics and satisfaction concerning treatment and services. The selection and application of patient-reported measures can vary according to condition (generic, disease-specific or treatment-specific) and to the specific population evaluated (age and cognitive impairment). These measures can help weigh risks and benefits, as well as assess the cost effectiveness of treatments, thus influencing treatment recommendations and health policies. The incorporation of these measures into a professional's daily life not only represents an improvement in professional performance, but also addresses a humanitarian concern.

Background and aims. To assess the color, translucency and masking properties of novel flowable giomers. Methods. Three flowable giomers were used for the fabrication of 1-mm thick samples (n=126) in three consistencies (Beautifil flow Plus X F00; Beautifil flow F02; Beautifil flow Plus X F03, Shofu Dental Corporation, Japan) and two shades (A2 and A3). The relative spectral reflectance was recorded over white, black, C3, and a tested-sample colored background. Lightness (L*), and color coordinates a* and b*, Relative Translucency parameter (RTP00) and masking capacity of C3 background were calculated; differences in color and translucency were compared with thresholds for perceptibility and acceptability (PT and AT). Statistical analyses used significance tests for paired samples. Results. All tested materials displayed increased values of L*: for A2 F00=86.16(±0.86), F02=86.39(±0.63), F03=86.40(±0.63); for A3: F00=84.24(±0.58), F02=83.34(±0.3), F03=84.19(±0.4), as well as of RTP: for A2 F00=30.34(±0.88), F02=31.37(±0.94), F03=31.11(±1.15), for A3 F00=29.64(±1.64), F02=30.79(±1.02), F03=30.1(±1.26). For A2 samples, the masking capacity was significantly different for all materials, whilst for A3 there were differences only between F00-F03 and F02-F03. Conclusions. The tested flowable giomers proved high lightness and translucency. The color differences between the materials with the same designation were below the perceptibility threshold in most cases. In addition, the differences in relative translucency parameters ranged between the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. All tested flowable giomers had an unacceptable masking capacity for a C3 background.
