Smeared versus localised sources in flux compactifications

Abstract: We investigate whether vacuum solutions in flux compactifications that are obtained with smeared sources (orientifolds or D-branes) still survive when the sources are localised. This seems to rely on whether the solutions are BPS or not. First we consider two sets of BPS solutions that both relate to the GKP solution through T-dualities: (p + 1)-dimensional solutions from spacetime-filling Op-planes with a conformally Ricci-flat internal space, and p-dimensional solutions with Op-planes that wrap a 1-cycle ins… Show more

“…This again confirms our intuition that the tachyon is a generic feature of the physics of anti-branes in backgrounds with charge dissolved in fluxes, that cannot be removed by playing with the parameters of the supergravity solution. It would be clearly important to confirm this explicitly by extending our analysis to other backgrounds with charge dissolved in fluxes, both with anti-D3 and with other anti-brane charges [10,[44][45][46][47][48].…”

“…The reason is that the flux is attracted gravitationally and electromagnetically towards the antibranes. If the antibranes are replaced instead with branes, the electromagnetic repulsion will exactly counterbalance the gravitational pull [34]. This entails an obvious instability since a clumping of fluxes carrying Dk charges will enhance the brane-flux annihilation.…”

“…If one allows the D6 worldvolume to be AdS 7 instead of Mink 7 the space transversal to the brane can be made compact and conformal to S 3 [34]. The resulting solution was described qualitatively in [18,33].…”
